Baseball Brothers

In the story Heart of a Champion, by Carl Deuker, a boy named Seth, who lives in Redwood City, San Francisco had a pretty good life. When he was only four years old his father died because of drunk driving. Because Seth’s father died, his mother is struggling trying to feed him, clothe him and to make sure his life is normal. Readers will learn in this realistic, but fictional story, only the strongest of friendships can replace the most devastating events in a family.

When Seth’s father dies he meets Jimmy and they start to have a very good friendship.  Over time they become the best of friends. When they are together they have a special bond that no two other human beings have. Seth feels that Jimmy has filled the gap in his life for his father when his father had died. An example of this is that my friend’s dog died from cancer. But then he got another dog and named it the same name as the other one.

The baseball field has been Jimmy’s home away from home. But, when he met Seth, Jimmy’s goal was to teach Seth how to play baseball. At first Seth wasn’t good as he thought he would be. With time and practice Seth became better than he thought he would ever be. They practiced and played on the same team for years until they got to high school varsity

When Seth and Jimmy both get into high school they both agree to try out for the varsity baseball team. Seth thinks that Jimmy is going to make the team easily. Seth thought that he needs to train harder if he wants to make the team. Seth wants Jimmy to train with him so that Seth can become better. When Seth goes to try outs he ends up making the team.

At the end of the book it had a huge impact on my life.  In the end only the strongest of friendships can replace the most devastating events in a family.
